Treat Disease
We believe addiction is a chronic, progressive, and potentially fatal disease that affects the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Its roots can be genetic, hereditary, environmental, or behavioral, and like other diseases, it requires structured treatment and ongoing care. Addiction is not a matter of willpower or morality but a condition that demands intentional recovery efforts. Successful recovery depends upon the willingness to ask for and accept help, the courage to be honest, and being open minded to the process of the 12 steps.
At Sharpen Recovery, we believe freedom is possible. Sobriety is the foundation of healing, and we require participation in a 12-step recovery process, which has been a proven path for millions seeking lasting change. Programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and others provide a framework for spiritual growth, accountability, and community—all critical components of sustained recovery.
Consider Christ
While we acknowledge that the 12-step tradition recognizes a Higher Power of each person’s understanding, Sharpen Recovery is not a 12-step program itself—though we embrace and require participation in the 12-step process as a core element of recovery. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds and beliefs, knowing that each person’s journey is unique. Anyone who desires to recover and finds our program beneficial is accepted here.
At the same time, Sharpen Recovery is Christ-centered. We believe that the Bible reveals God’s truth, His love for the world, and His gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. As followers of Christ, we believe that salvation is by grace through faith in Him, and that through His life, death, and resurrection, we are offered forgiveness, redemption, and new life.
For those exploring faith, we invite them to consider Christ—to reflect on who He is and what He offers. For those who have already placed their faith in Him, we encourage deeper spiritual growth and a life marked by His love and teachings. At Sharpen, we share the gospel openly and trust in the transformative power of Christ, who brings true healing, restoration, and purpose to all who seek Him.
Sharpen Together
Community is the cornerstone of life in a Sharpen home. We believe that the opposite of addiction is connection, and we are stronger together. The friendships formed in Sharpen homes provide strength, accountability, and encouragement to continue the journey of sobriety. The Big Book reminds us that “you will escape disaster together and commence shoulder to shoulder your common journey” (p. 152-153). Similarly, Proverbs 27:17 teaches that “as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” These truths inspire us to foster an environment where participants support and uplift each other, sharing both struggles and victories. At Sharpen, we believe living in community not only empowers individuals to overcome addiction but also creates lifelong bonds rooted in love and service. Our value, Sharpen Together, reflects our commitment to building a culture where no one walks the road of recovery alone.
Hope for More
Sobriety is just the beginning; it unlocks the potential to achieve far more than what seemed possible during active addiction. Hope for More reflects our belief that every participant is made for a greater purpose. Sobriety allows individuals to dream again, build healthy relationships, and pursue meaningful goals. Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” At Sharpen, we encourage participants to trust in God’s kindness and His plans for their lives, knowing that the challenges of their past have shaped them for a brighter future. This value calls for an environment that actively propels individuals toward their goals, creating space for them to embrace their potential and flourish in both recovery and faith. As transformation unfolds, we are continually reminded that recovery is not just about survival—it’s about thriving.
Culture Statements:
Our Stories Have Power
The stories of those who have overcome addiction are among the most powerful tools for transformation. Sharing the depths of destruction and the climb toward recovery influences others in profound ways, showing what is possible and offering hope to those still in darkness. By sharing our experiences, we create ripples of change that inspire new beginnings.
We Celebrate Success
We intentionally celebrate victories—big and small—because each step forward matters. These moments of celebration create momentum, reminding us of the progress we’ve made and fueling our belief in the success that lies ahead. Rejoicing together strengthens our shared journey.
We Are Rich in Recovery Capital
At Sharpen, we are equipped with abundant resources that empower us to build and sustain meaningful lives in recovery—personal strengths, social connections, and practical tools. We declare that everything we need to thrive is within reach, and as we take intentional steps forward, we watch these riches unfold in our lives.
Our Hope Is in Jesus
Our ultimate hope is in Jesus Christ, who conquered sin and death and offers us new life. Through His perfect sacrifice, we have righteousness and eternal salvation. His victory defines our identity and gives us strength for today and hope for eternity.
There Is Grace at Every Step
Grace is our response to the brokenness of the world and the struggles of recovery. We extend kindness to others as God has shown to us, even when it’s difficult. Here, grace softens rough edges, builds relationships, and reflects the love of Christ, making room for transformation at every step.
We Are Serious About Recovery
Addiction is a matter of life or death, and recovery must come first. We commit to sobriety through the 12-steps, meetings, sponsorship, and community because our lives and futures depend on it. By taking recovery seriously, we honor God, break free from the chains of addiction, and step into the fullness of life He offers.
We See and Think Beyond Ourselves
We consider how we can benefit others—loving our neighbors as ourselves—newcomers, peers, and the broader community. Inspired by Christ’s example of humility and sacrifice, we aim to create selfless impact. By reflecting God’s love through our actions, we seek to live with purpose beyond ourselves, cultivating a life and community of care and service.
We Dream Big
We believe in God’s ability to do the impossible and align ourselves with His vision for restoration and transformation. We dream boldly for our lives, families, and communities, trusting in His abundance and power to exceed our greatest expectations. Our big dreams are acts of faith in a God who moves mountains.
